Sliding scale cable is a mechanical problem, check parts around the cable, are they stuck.
This radio has (probably) same problems as the others on same age; DC block capacitor (10nF?) on EL84 leaks and causes distortion and finally tube is out. Magic eye needs a real magic or must be changed, expensive.
There might be that schematic diagram is attached to the bottom cover.
